Griffith university detailed entry Requirements

There are a number of notable aspects in how Griffith/USC structure their graduate medicine degree.

Fast track to medicine

Griffith is a graduate medicine degree, but if you get into the Bachelor of Medical Science degree at either Griffith or the University of the Sunshine Coast and provided you are diligent and achieve a GPA of at least 5.5, you are able to go straight into medicine. At USC you also need to pass the Human Skills for Medicine/Communication Skills for Medicine subject.

The Bachelor of Medical Science degree at Griffith is an accelerated degree, being completed in 2 rather than 3 years.

Recent Changes to numbers and location

There are 142 Commonwealth Supported Places and 56 Bonded Medical Program places within the Doctor of Medicine degree, and of these a total of 80 places (40%) are allocated to Griffith/USC Medical Science graduates including 20 from USC.

A proportion of places in the Doctor of Medicine degree are also reserved for students who come from a rural background. For graduates priority access for rural applicants is given. There are a total of 35 international places.

How Griffith treats previous degrees

If you are intending to progress through the graduate entry path and your undergraduate (or subsequent) degree is older than 10 years, you can undertake a minimum of 1 year of additional study and still comply with entry requirements.

It's worth noting, however, that if you are intending to progress through Griffith’s Bachelor of Medical Science path, you can only do so if your senior secondary studies was completed no more than 1 year prior to your application for the Bachelor's degree and you must not have commenced tertiary studies at Diploma level or higher.

Griffith accepts all degrees, including higher and faster ones

You don't need to have studied an undergraduate degree at Griffith to apply for medicine. Griffith also accepts accelerated 2 year Bachelor degrees as well as 1 year conversion degrees (which is just as well given Griffith’s Bachelor of Medical Science is an accelerated degree).

Griffith will also give credit to higher degrees (Honours, Masters and PhDs) in terms of how GPAs are calculated.

GUMSAA - is Griffith for Interview

Griffith call their interview the GUMSAA - which stands for Griffith University Multi Station Admissions Assessment. The interesting aspect of this is the selection criteria for the offer of an interview is based on a 50/50 combination of GPA and GAMSAT/MCAT. This is calculated using combination rank - meaning a lower score in one criterion is able to be offset by the other.

Changes afoot in 2025

Griffith and USC are indicating that in 2025 the selection criteria for entry into the Bachelor of Medical Science will be determined as follows:

Selection for admission to an undergraduate degree is made on the basis of academic merit (ATAR). For admission commencing Trimester 1, 2025, the Overall Score from UCAT ANZ, if available, will be used for second order ranking within an ATAR band. Applicants without a UCAT ANZ result will still be considered for selection but will be ranked at the bottom of their ATAR band.

In addition in 2025, the GPA requirement for provisional entry to medicine has increased from 5 to 5.5.
